Sue Prins


Sue Prins started quilting in the early 1970’s, and started teaching the craft to domestic workers in 1977.  Over time, she has graduated to teaching larger groups and has taught throughout Southern Africa – for individuals, groups, guilds and at quilt festivals.

 

Quilt Awards:

1996 “Hex Folly” won 2nd prize in the Large Traditional category at National Quilt Festival.  This quilt toured with a European quilt exhibition and was featured in various publications. 

1998 Viewer’s Choice with “Hex Folly” at Golden Rand Guild Exhibition2006 “Celtic Wedding Ring” won Best Traditional of Show and Best Hand Workmanship at the National Quilt Festival in Port Elizabeth in 2006 “Celtic Wedding Ring” won Best of Country in the World Quilt Competition.

2010 “Circles of Friends” won the Good Hope Quilters’ Guild Fynbos Challenge.2012 “Victoria” won the Jeanetta van der Walt Floating Trophy (Viewers’ Choice) at Good Hope Quilters’ Guild.

2013 “Victoria” won third prize in the Traditional Section of the World Quilt Competition.

Other Quilting Activities

Sue has served on quilting committees since the 1990’s:  Golden Rand Guild (newsletter editor), Good Hope Quilters’ Guild (secretary, newsletter editor, SAQG Representative), Overberg Quilters’ Guild (newsletter editor, secretary and chairlady) and was President of SAQG 2015-2017. 

 

She has served on 3 National Quilt Festival committees:  1991 (Quilt Safari, class registrar), 2002 (Down to Earth, quilt registrar) and 2011 (Alive with Colour, quilt registrar).

 

Sue is a SAQG qualified quilt judge, and has been involved in tutoring the next generation of quilt judges since 2004. She was previously the organizer of the SAQG Guild Judging Accreditation course and continues as a tutor.

 

She has been a tutor in the SAQG Quilt Teachers Accreditation courses since 2014 and is an SAQG Accredited Quilt Teacher.

 

Sue has a passion for hand piecing, hand quilting as well as for Celtic Knots.
