Our quilters club, Kreatiewe Lappies, is based in a rural town named Smithfield, in the Free State. We are a diverse group of people who gather with a shared goal - to find inspiration, learn from each other, and share experiences.
Areas - Smithfield, Zastron, Rouxville, Bethulie, and Bloemfontein
Meetings - Every third Thursday of the month

In the year 2000, two of Smithfield’s residents expressed the need to learn how to quilt (one of these ladies, Annette Vogel, was later appointed as one of the club’s chairpersons).
Another Smithfielder, Luna Wilken, was part of Dewetsdorp’s quilters club at that stage. She agreed to help establish Smithfield’s own club. They left a sign-up sheet at the town’s co-op, inviting anyone interested to add their details.
At first, members gathered at houses in town. Over the years, as the club expanded, Kreatiewe Lappies moved to the community hall and then to the golf club’s hall.
Currently, the club has about 21 active members, which includes people from Zastron, Rouxville, Bethulie, and Bloemfontein.
Our monthly meetings consist of “Show and Tell”, working on new projects, catching up over snacks and tea, laughing a lot, and supporting each other when needed.
We primarily focus on quilting, but also exchange tips on crocheting, knitting, and a variety of other handcrafts. We put these skills to good use for our yearly charity project, where we provide people in need with quilts, blankets, vanity cases or other necessities.
Patchjol, our biggest event each year, was initiated by Carina Lubbe. During this event, we celebrate fabric by hosting speakers, demonstrations, and local vendors. This is usually a very inspiring day for all the organisers and attendees!
