11th SAQG Travelling Exhibition of Quilts

2019 - 2021 - 11th SAQG Travelling Exhibition of Quilts

During the Covid 19 pandemic the Travelling Quilts were kept safe but unfortunately were not displayed nor travelled during the lockdown.

Due to ongoing travel and Corona virus restrictions SAQG has decided to disband the collection and return the quilts to their owners.

GOOD NEWS - Images of the TE Quilts Collection are on display in an album in the Gallery on the SAQG website. ENJOY!

In 2019 at the SA National Quilt Festival in Gauteng 22 quilts were selected from the competition quilts on display and together with 30 more quilts of the 30th Birthday Celebration Collection, these 52 quilt works made up the 11th SAQG Travelling Quilt Exhibition.

The quilts were seen in Stilbaai, Southern Cape in early September on show at the SPRING Show at Dias Quilters’ Guild in Eastern Cape in late September 2019. The collection travelled to Windhoek to the Quilt festival in Namibia in October 2019. The quilts were displayed as part of the inaugural Quilts in the Church quilt exhibition in the Dutch Reformed Church in Nieu Bethesda, Eastern Cape in December 2019.

In December 2019 the Travelling Quilts journeyed to Kwa Zulu-Natal.

The South African Quilters Guild proudly presents the 11th SAQG Travelling Quilts Exhibition.

The Travelling Exhibition was started with the aim to raise public awareness for the Art of Quilting, and showcase work of quilters. At our National Quilt Festival every second year a selection is made of quilts entered in the competition and these quilts travel the country for two years, travelling to guilds, groups, exhibition spaces and galleries to expose quilting to the general public. We include different styles of work and people are in awe of the quality of workmanship as well as the imaginative way in which colour and design is used.

In 2019 SAQG celebrated their 30th anniversary and a collection of 30 Birthday Celebration quilts are included in the travelling exhibition. Quilters around the country could participate and made a small quilt 30 x30cm. The theme is Time to Celebrate, and only and all the colours of the SAQG logo had to be used. Any technique could be used to create the quilts. This collection is colourful, happy and festive and celebrates the 30 years of the national guild. If Guild and groups are interested in hosting an exhibition and/ or show these quilts, please contact the convenor.

The 11th SAQG Travelling Quilts Exhibition 2019-2021 started with a celebration BANG! At the Dias Quilters Spring Show 26-28 September in Port Elizabeth the TE quilts were on display and much admired by quilters and visitors.Quilts were on display in Stilbaai on 9th September 2019. At a spectacular opening- organiser Nell-Marie van Eeden introduced the holiday town to the Art of Quilting. The work of seasoned quilters such as Suzette Ehlers and Sue Prins as well as the local group’s quilts, were exhibited to form a wonderful display. The 30th Birthday Celebration Quilts Collection enhanced the festive spirit of the occasion. We were entertained by a local group of musicians and feasted on a scrumptious spread of food and wine. Our good friend Louise Rheeder now lives in Stilbaai and is still quilting at age 93. The local owner of Bay Linen ran classes for the week which were well attended and teachers came from all over the country.

The TE was on display at the 1st Namibia Kwilt Fees  8-10 October in Windhoek, and at the Kokerboom Kwiltgilde in Karasburg at their meeting at the end of October. The 11th SAQG Travelling Quilt Exhibition was displayed as part of the inaugural Quilts in the Church quilt exhibition in the Dutch Reformed Church in Nieu Bethesda, Eastern Cape from 14 -18 December 2019. The church was filled with quilts covering the pews and in the gallery and admired by visitors.
